We celebrated Hispanic Culture Day in our school on Thursday October 12th. Students participated in many activities on the day in celebration of Hispanic culture, language and of course, art work!
Our art activity celebrated the work of 6 Hispanic artists: Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Salvador Dalí from Spain, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera from Mexico and Fernando Botero from Colombia. The students were introduced to one famous painting by each of these artists:
Frida Kahlo – ‘Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird’ – 1940
Salvador Dali – ‘The Persistence of Memory’ – 1931
Pablo Picasso – ‘The Weeping Woman’ – 1937
Juan Gris – ‘Violin and Checkerboard’ – 1913
Diego Rivera – ‘The Flower Carrier’ – 1935
Fernando Botero – ‘Still Life with Green Soup’ – 1972
All students from Grade 1 to Grade 5 were involved in painting recreations of these famous artworks. They identified the colours and painting techniques used in the paintings and worked together on the recreations.
