Story of Nian and art from around the world

Next week, the Chinese New Year will celebrate the Year of the Goat. Traditions of celebrating the new year came about partly from the story of Nian, a sea-dwelling monster who would terrorize the people on land once a year until they discovered his greatest fears – loud noises and the color red. PreK 5 students created a paper lantern inspired by this story as they begin exploring art forms from around the world. Happy Chinese New Year!

Hello, my name is (Ms.) Catherine and I am the Art teacher at SEK Qatar. Once upon a time I received my Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. While I was in school, I had the amazing opportunity to spend a semester studying art in Italy. Now I am an Art teacher and I have worked in the US, South Africa, and Qatar. When I'm not busy finding lesson ideas on Pinterest I like going desert driving (my husband does the driving), exploring in the souq, and trying new restaurants in Doha. I think an art education is essential to academic success for students and I am very proud to teach at one of the schools in Doha with a dedicated Art program!
