Painting with light! – Preschool 5 explore ‘Light and Shadow’

The most recent Unit of Inquiry in preschool 5 was an exploration of ‘Light and Shadow’. In Visual Arts, we had a lot of fun experimenting with the interaction between colour and light. Each student made their own laminate sheet of colourful shadow. They created a unique composition by cutting different shapes and colours from cellophane paper. We had an exciting lesson exploring how the finished creations interacted with the light!

The students were then introduced to the concept of shadow puppets with a variety of scenes and puppets from the Museum of Islamic Art here in Doha. Using these resources, they created and performed short stories. This was followed by the students developing their own stories for a shadow puppet show in their Homeroom class. They each created a puppet in Visual Arts, and I hope that you enjoyed their performances at the end of the unit!

As a final exploration of Light and Shadows, Mr. Fran joined our art class for a lesson on painting with light. Using the ‘Sphero’ robots and a camera on slow shutter speed in a dark classroom, we guided the robots around the room whilst altering the colour of the light they emit using the ipads. The completed photographs are truly stunning.
