Preschool 3 – Flower Power!

Preschool 3 are having a wonderful time exploring the unit ‘Living Things’ in the art room! In Visual Arts, we have been exploring how plants grow and change, with a focus on changes in colour and shape. So far, students have been learning to identify the parts of plants and flowers in art images, and have practiced mark-making with their fingers and various tools to represent the plants and flowers at their different stages.

We began this unit by discussing the different types of plants we know, and thinking about what plants need in order to live and grow. I was so impressed to hear so many of the students talk about how they help with gardening in their homes! In pairs, the students drew their own garden, choosing what flowers and plants they wanted to include. In another lesson, we used the medium of collage to represent flowers using different shapes. Each student created an individual flower and the outcome is a lovely collage flower garden in our art room.

In their Homeroom class, students have been learning a lot about planet earth, and so another of our art lessons involved creating a large planet earth through collage. I’m sure that many of you will have seen the outcome of this on display on the preschool 3 board in our school hall!

Our most recent Visual Arts lessons have been all about exploring the interior of plant forms. Students have been creating prints using a variety of different fruits and vegetables, cut in half. They have thoroughly enjoyed this process, and it’s great to see their fine motor skills developing and their movements becoming more precise.

I hope you enjoy looking through the photographs to get an experience of what takes place in our Visual Arts lessons.
