SEK Qatar joins the ‘buddy bench’ movement!

We are currently coming to the end of a very exciting project in the art room, in which Grade 2 and Grade 5 students have been working really hard to produce a ‘Friendship Bench’ for our school. This Unit has been a collaboration between the two grades that also involved our counsellor, Ms Marlo. The Central Idea of the Unit is ‘Public areas strengthen communities and provide people with opportunities to connect’.

At the beginning of the project, Ms. Marlo delivered a lesson on friendship with each of the participating classes. Our students then came up with the idea of creating and installing a ‘Friendship Bench’ to further improve the sense of friendship and belonging for every individual in our school community. In art class the students created a large scale group brainstorm, recording and sharing their initial ideas for the project. Each student was then invited to submit an individual design for the bench. They explored different ways of representing and symbolising qualities and values of friendship, and as a group they decided on a final design.

This has been a really fun and creative process, which I’m sure you’ll see as you take a look through our photos. I look forward to sharing the finished product with you soon!
