Under the Sea with Preschool 5

Preschool 5 have dived into some great art making to express what they are learning about ‘Under the Sea’! I have been so impressed by their extensive knowledge of different creatures that live under the sea and this is reflected so well in the art they have created. Each student has unique and different ideas from one another about what they would like to express and this has made our art room an exciting place to be! At the beginning of the unit, they shared all that they knew with eachother in a huge collaborative drawing, which you will see below.

This unit saw the introduction of a new art material in preschool 5 – oil pastels. They allow for a vibrant and intense expression of colour which excellently conveys the beauty of under the sea! Students visualised what it would be like to travel under the sea in their very own submarine. They imagined they were looking through a porthole and made an oil pastel drawing of what they could see! Their outcomes are individual and really beautiful!

Preschool 5 students have also used sculptural and model making techniques to express their learning. They have chosen different sea creatures and are using the technique of papier mache to create a 3D model of their creature of choice. This was a new technique for many of the preschool 5 students, but they have found the process straightforward to imitate and learn. It has given them a chance to establish their creativity and to understand the process of building or creating something in 3D.

Take a look at the photographs below to see their progress.
