Exploring Islamic Art

I would like to share with you some of the work that students from Grade 2 – 5 have been creating in the ‘International Art’ extra-curricular activity. The purpose of ‘International Art’ club is to explore different art movements and styles from the different continents of the world.  The students have opportunities to create artworks inspired by a range of countries using a variety of media and techniques. We hope that the work created in the club will be incorporated in displays during our school’s celebration of International Day at the end of term 2!

Students are currently exploring Islamic Art, in particular ceramic tiles. We looked at some examples of Islamic pottery from the Museum of Islamic Art here in Doha. Students have been learning about Arabesque patterns that appear on the pottery, which includes symmetry, foliage and vines. Every student has now designed their own pattern inspired by the Arabesque style and they are transferring their design onto a ceramic tile.

Some of the other countries we will be exploring as inspiration include Japan, Italy and America…stay tuned as I hope to share some more work from ‘International Art’ club with you soon!
